Atheists are taking over the world

On the front page of today's (03/09/09) USA Today is an article about a just-released survey of religious beliefs that shows the number of 'Nones' is the fastest rising group. People with no religious affiliation now make up 15% of the US as opposed to 8% in 1990.

More details are on the USA Today website where they have a lovely chart and you can see the breakdown by state. In Kansas, we are up by 5% with 11% for 2008, 6% in 1990.

The name of the study is called the American Religious Indentification Survey (ARIS) and it is considered more comprehensive than other religious surveys out there. The original 1990 survey was based on 113,000 interviews. An additional 50,000 interviews were done in 2001 and this newest survey included 54,000 interviews in 2008.

According to the USA Today chart, Kansas is 41st among the 'Nones' but we're growing.
