Democratic National Convention - Interfaith Gathering

By TopekaAtheist - Posted on 06 August 2008

For those who haven't heard, the Democratic National Convention (which will be held on August 24th) is going to kick off with an 'Interfaith Gathering'. The CEO of the DNCC is Rev. Leah Daughtry (a Pentecostal preacher) who has pledged to bring faith into the Democratic Party. She has declared that this is a time of celebration of various religious traditions in the Democratic Party.

Here is a little bit about Daughtry and her views from an AP article from last month:

Daughtry, 44, was preparing for an Aug. 24 interfaith service that will open the Democrats' gathering here — a first for a party that hasn't always gotten God. Before her was an angry letter from a secularist group that wanted to know whether atheists would be on the podium.

"Atheists speaking at an interfaith service ... does that work?" Daughtry asked this week. "I don't quite know. But they're part of the party, you treat them with respect. I'll give them an answer."

Both the Secular Coalition of America and the Brights have sent out emails asking that non-believers send a message to the DNC requesting that an atheist/agnostic be included at their 'Interfaith' kickoff.

The SCA has a larger article with a form at the bottom which you can just fill in your contact information and send a message to the DNC:

Here's a recent article in which the local Denver interfaith community was worried about being left out but has been assured that they will be included:

I've always had a problem with Atheism being considered a 'faith.' I understand the importance of having a secular voice represented, especially in the realm of politics. I'm not too worried about Obama being ignorant of the secular opinion, though. He has a great head on his shoulders. Check out this great speech he made on faith: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid353515028?bctid=416343938

Very lovely populist view. Plus, I'm pretty sure he's a closet atheist/agnostic.

Ben - You're exactly right in the fact that atheism isn't a faith like so many theists like to claim. That's one of the major reasons the ACT doesn't join the Interfaith Group here in Topeka.

The problem with what's going on at the DNC is that those with faith don't want us to have a voice in the political arena. As Lori Lipman Brown points out in her letter at the SCA, this interfaith gathering shouldn't have started in the first place. Since it has and there's no stopping it at this point, we just have to make sure that we are heard.
