Pulpit Freedom Sunday

By FatJesus - Posted on 25 September 2008

This Sunday, September 28, will be the Alliance Defense Fund's "Pulpit Freedom Sunday". The ADF is encouraging pastors to "preach from their pulpits about the moral qualifications of candidates seeking political office". They claim that the government does not have a right to revoke a church's tax exempt status and are hoping to have a case to challenge it in court.

“Pastors have a right to speak about Biblical truths from the pulpit without fear of punishment. No one should be able to use the government to intimidate pastors into giving up their constitutional rights,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Erik Stanley. “If you have a concern about pastors speaking about electoral candidates from the pulpit, ask yourself this: should the church decide that question, or should the IRS?”

“ADF is not trying to get politics into the pulpit. Churches can decide for themselves that they either do or don’t want their pastors to speak about electoral candidates. The point of the Pulpit Initiative is very simple: the IRS should not be the one making the decision by threatening to revoke a church’s tax-exempt status. We need to get the government out of the pulpit,” said Stanley.

They plan on releasing a list of participating pastors next week (probably hoping that the IRS will come after at least one).

Just tax the churches and problem solved. Then they can talk about whatever they want.

Alliance Defense Fund announced yesterday that its second annual Pulpit Freedom Sunday will be held on September 27 cisco dumps. The event is part of ADF's Pulpit Initiative which is designed to challenge the constitutionality of Internal Revenue Code provisions barring partisan electoral activity by Section 501(c)(3) non-profits, including churches. This year more than 80 pastors will preach sermons related to biblical perspectives on the positions of electoral candidates or current government officials who are not involved in election contests. ADF has posted legal resources for participating churches VCP-410 dumps. Last year some critics charged that ADF was in violation of ethical rules binding on lawyers who practice before the IRS by encouraging churches to violate the tax code braindumps. (See prior posting.) ADF this year makes clear that there is no legal problem with pastors speaking from the pulpit about current government officials who are not presently candidates for elective office. ADF complains that "the IRS has issued increasingly vague guidance on the law, which limits the First Amendment rights of pastors speaking from the pulpit brain dumps, but has continued to launch investigations while avoiding court review of the constitutionality of its actions."
