As we know by now, McCain's newly selected running-mate, Sarah Palin, has been received enthusiastically by the Religious Right. The article to which I have provided a link below strongly suggests why that is so. She has, of course, God's mandate for her repressive, theocratic, authoritarian views on social issues related to sex, etc; but her divine directives are not limited to those: rather, they involve all areas of government policy. God has revealed to her, and she is not shy about announcing, his favor for Republican policies ranging from the Iraq war--"a task that is from God"--to establishment of gas pipelines that would be lucrative to her state. Here we have, then, as one of the two viable candidates for the vice presidency, a person who thinks (or at least claims to think) that all of her policy preferences are really God's demands. From that attitude naturally follows the disastrous corollary that her policies must be immune to scrutiny or the necessity for compromise. For the theocratic Palin, opposition to or critical discussion of political initiatives would be at best unnecessary trifling, and at worst--and most likely--intolerable obstruction of the will of the God of our Fathers.

Here's a question that occurs to me when reading this: What do you think even someone like Barack Obama or someone more "liberal" would say to the question "Do you think you're doing God's work?" I think things are to the point now where even people who wouldn't say stuff like this on their own would feel like they have to answer "yes" in order to even be trusted enough to be elected. I admit it's just speculation, but I honestly think a "no" answer to that question would really attract criticism. Just once I'd like to see a politician who I think would stand up and refuse to bring their faith into their politics. Of course, they'd never get elected, especially if they were running for President.
I agree. Early in Obama's presidential campaign, I criticized him for the vague but emotionally evocative talk about God that he was already employing. It would be interesting to research the history of presidential campaigns to learn the extent to which previous candidates have employed talk about God in their rhetoric.
There is reference to God in a lot of presidential speeches, but I expect that the tone of the references probably changed during the Cold War and the campaign against communism. Changing from a statement of universal faith 'God bless America' or 'God save America' to a proactive 'America is acting on the will of God' as it morphed into under George W.
Here is my thinking. A certain percentage of ALL Americans are Atheist. That means the percentage apples to Senators, Representatives, Presidents and Vice Presidents. If you would go back over the history of our nation, mathematics would prove that we have in fact been served by Government officials that were Atheist. Announcing that they held those beliefs would have been instant Political suicide. However refreshing it would be to see someone run for office and announce to the public their Atheistic beliefs, in my opinion we will NEVER see it happen.
